Nigeria election result: APC candidate, Faleke wins Ikeja federal constituency

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Mr. James Faleke of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the House of Representatives from Ikeja federal constituency in the just-concluded election.Mr. Faleke of the APC, got 25,195 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Mr. Mutiu Okunola, who scored 21,373 votes.

Mr. Arowosaya Ademola of Action Democratic Party, scored 854 votes, while Babalola Wasiu of Action Democratic Party got 118 and African Democratic Congress, ADC, scored 456 while Accord Party’s Olusegun Mojisola polled 32 votes.

Announcing the results at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, INEC Returning Officer for the elections, Professor Olufunmilayo Bameke said that Faleke was declared the winner having satisfied all the requirements and having the highest votes.

Responding to the election, Faleke thanked the electorate for casting their votes for him to represent them at the lower chamber of National Assembly.

He applauded the bravery of security agents and INEC officials in spite of harassment and intimidation displayed by the opposition candidate from People Democratic Party, PDP, during the collation of results.Faleke called on contestants, who lost at the polls in Ikeja Federal Constituency, to join hands with him to move the constituency forward.

Meanwhile, there was a mild drama at the collation centre at Ikeja Local Government Secretariat as the PDP candidate in the election, Okunola stormed the venue of the collation, scattered and disrupted the process in the presence of the security agents, alleging that there were irregularities in the election results.

It took the intervention of the security agents and other party agents to tame the situation when Okunola suddenly fainted after exhausting his energy damaging tables, chairs used for the collation, and he was rushed out of the scene by security agents.

The collation continued an hour later after security agents made some arrests.

While reacting to the attempt to disrupt the collation of the results of the elections, Faleke said that contestants should be democrats and ready to accept defeat by shunning acts capable of truncating the democratic process.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Engr Mojeed Balogun called on the candidates to learn how to accept defeat and if they felt cheated, they should approach elections tribunal instead of taking laws into their hands.

Balogun condemned the unruly behaviour of Okunola at the collation centre, appealing to the residents to continue to be law abiding.
