Driver nabbed for allegedly killing policeman
A driver has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing a mobile police officer at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government of Anambra State.
The deceased, Sgt. Tanko Abubakar, was said to be on duty with his colleagues at Ugwunwasike roundabout when the incident occurred.
The Nation gathered that the suspect was approaching a roundabout in his Mercedes V-boot car when he saw policemen and reversed.
“He quickly made a U-turn as soon as he sighted the officers in an attempt to evade any encounter with them,” an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said.
He said the policemen ordered the suspect to stop, but he refused.
According to him, the action forced one of them to jump on the bonnet.
“The policeman was on the bonnet, while the suspect was speeding and swerving the car with the intention to make him fall down,” the source added.
He said the policeman later fell off the car and sustained injuries when the suspect hit an electric pole.
The Nation learnt that the policemen was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
The Divisional Crime Officer 1 (DCO 1), Fidelis Erishi, confirmed the incident.
He said: “We have arrested the suspect and his car has been impounded.
