Lions Club urges Nigerians to form habit of blood donation
Lions Club has urged adult Nigerians to develop a habit of blood donation.
The club said blood donation, apart from being medically beneficial to recipients, also provides emotional and physical health benefits for donors.
President of Eko Centennial Lions Club, Shogo Oloshunde, stated this in Lagos on Thursday at a press briefing to announce the club’s activities for the installation of its officers for 2018/-2019 Lions year.
The event, which will hold on November 10, at Oriwu Club, Ikorodu, Lagos at 2.00pm, will feature charter presentation/investiture of Oloshunde as charter president and the installation of other club officers.
It will also feature a voluntary blood donation exercise, organised in conjunction with Lagos State Blood Transfusion Services (LSBTS) at the venue.
LSBTS Executive Secretary, Dr. Modupe Olaiya, who is guest speaker for the occasion, will speak on: “Benefits of taking good care of our health”.
There will also be a raffle draw and fundraising for the club’s projects.
Emphasizing the importance of blood donation, Oloshunde said: “Blood donation is definitely a noble act. Many clinics and hospitals constantly require blood for several purposes. This makes the idea of blood donation a noble gesture as it provides life-saving help to people and patients.
“Many people believe that blood donation is harmful for their body, however, this is untrue.
“Blood donation benefits are numerous; it is a life-saver. Many people require urgent blood and by donating our blood we easily give them life. This is one of the biggest satisfactions one can experience. It makes us proud and can also give us a purpose of life – the feeling that you made a difference to someone’s life.
“It refreshes our system, leading to a healthier body that raises our life span, causes a rise in the quantity of blood and also aids proper diagnosis.
“Therefore, we do not need to fear blood donation as it a painless process that takes only around an hour. We can visit hospitals and donate blood in our spare time”.
