United States Consul General in Lagos F. John Bray, who was in Osogbo to monitor the rerun election, has described the process as credible.

He said he did not observe any malpractices or violations of the Electoral Act in Unit 17, Ward 5 where the rerun election took place.

Bray was at the unit from morning when voting started till result was announced at about 3.50pm.

Asked about his observations, he said: “The process has been credible.”

On allegations that some voters were denied access to some units by thugs, Bray said: “There are things going on in six other units. I cannot comment on those things.

“I’m here as an observer today. All I can talk about is what’s in front of me. And today in Osogbo its working fine.

“At this polling unit things have been going on pretty well today. No problem with card readers; people have been orderly.

“We have party agents here from all the political parties. I’m not hearing a lot of complaints. I haven’t seen any vote buying here."

On why he was there personally to monitor the election, Bray said it was due to the importance the United States attaches to democratic processes.

“The United States is interested in democracy, because we’re a democratic country. So, we always support elections and democracy in Nigeria.

“I observe all the elections personally and I was here last week,” he said.

On how he rates the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bray said: “From what I’ve seen so far in Osogbo, INEC's performance is fine.”

Bray, who was at the unit when gunshots were fired around noon, praised the security agencies for preventing any disruptions.

“There was someone who tried to disrupt the poll. They quickly got the unit back to order. The Police and security services came together. There was somebody trying to upset the balance, but he didn’t,” Bray said

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won in the supplementary election held in three units of Ife North and Ife South local governments on Thursday.

At Unit 12, Ward 7, Adereti Village, Olode, Ife South Local Government, the party polled
283 votes to defeat Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which got 15 votes.

At Oyere village, Unit 2, Ward 10, Ife North Local Government, APC garnered 126 votes while PDP polled two votes.
Similarly, at Unit 10, Ward 8, Osi, Ife South Local Government, APC scored 172 to beat PDP which polled 21 votes. The two parties were the top contenders in the election.

At Olode village, there was a large turnout of voters and the exercise started at 8:00 am as slated. But the polling unit was besieged by huge number of politicians and hoodlums thereby creating tension at a stage in spite of the presence of heavy security.

The exercise, however, went peacefully. Sorting started at 2:02 pm and was followed by counting.
Voters had defied the rain which started at about 9:30 am. Most of them stayed in the rain, maintaining their positions in the long queues.

A total of 812 voters registered at the Olode polling unit but only 310 votes. Of the lot, six votes were voided.

The crowd of voters and politicians left the polling unit satisfied.

Security agencies represented at the venue included Soldiers, Navy, Police, Immigration, Civil defence and the DSS.

Observer group hails INEC for peaceful conduct

Observer groups accredited for the Osun governorship election have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the successful and peaceful conduct of the re-run exercise across the seven polling units in the state.

The leadership of the group, Mr Kalu Victor, gave the commendation during a post election news conference on Thursday in Osogbo.

Victor said, ” The electoral umpire had exhibited professionalism in its logistics and also mobilised and ensured timely arrival of election materials.

“There was heavy presence of various security personnel in and around the polling units to ensure that peace and calm atmosphere is maintained.

“The security presence actually in the polling units achieved its key purpose as there was utmost calm and peace within and around the polling units and the state at large.”

He said the group had observed that there was an impressive voters’ turnout in the seven polling units where the exercise took place in the state.
He commended the people of Osun for their maturity, especially for putting behind the string of violence .

He said it was, however, unfortunate that reputable individuals and political parties that understood the working of the law were calling for the sack of the INEC chairman and Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, based on the inconclusiveness of the Osun election.

He said such an action, at this crucial moment ahead the 2019 general elections, could plunge the country into very serious political crisis if not another civil war.

He, however, recommended that those engaged in violent confrontations, negative criticisms and misinformation of the public through false information, should be apprehended and made to face the law.

He also called on political parties to congratulate the winner of the Osun election, to ensure the growth of democracy in the state
