Edwin Clark: What Makarfi said about police raid on home of Niger Delta elder
Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi has condemned the raid on the Abuja residence of former Federal Commissioner for Information, Edwin Clark.
Makarfi, a PDP Presidential aspirant described the raid by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force as an evidence that the country was turning into “abyss and police state.”
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Muktar Sirajo, on Wednesday, the former Kaduna State governor said the assault on Clark was callous.
“It was clearly an attempt to intimidate and cow as well as stifle contrary opinion in clear violation of our constitution and international conventions, as we approach the 2019 elections,” he said.
sympathizing with Clark over the assault, Makarfi called on, “Nigerians to be vigilant and resist attempts at constricting our democratic space and fundamental human rights, (mis)using agencies of the state.”
“Even though the Police authorities have sought to distance themselves from this show of shame, they should go beyond ordinary disclaimer by instituting a genuine investigation into this with a view to unravelling the sordid act as well as bringing perpetrators to justice,” he added.
