CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS, NASS STAFF PROTEST BLOCKADE
STAFFS OF THE NATIONAL
ASSEMBLY WHO WERE REFUSED ENTRY INTO THE ASSEMBLY COMPLEX AND SOME CIVIL
SOCIETY GROUPS HAVE BECOME RESTLESS OUTSIDE THE GATES OF THE ASSEMBLY.
The civil society groups are
currently protesting what they describe as “illegal and unwarranted blockade of
the national assembly by men of the DSS”
According to the groups, the
blockade portrays Nigeria in bad light before the international community.
The groups also warned that by the recent developments, President Buhari
is out to truncate Nigeria’s democracy just like he did in 1984.
The protesters were seen
chanting songs at the entrance to the national assembly.
The clerk of the national
assembly, Sani Omolori, who was allowed into the assembly after an earlier
denial by security operatives, has however refused to go into the complex without
other staff of the assembly who are still locked out.
Tension, as DSS operatives lay siege to NASS, senators loyal to Saraki
block chamber
An atmosphere of tension
currently envelopes the premises of the national assembly particularly the
senate wing as operatives of the department of state services (DSS) lay
siege to the lobby.
The security operatives took
over the main entrance as early as 6am stopping lawmakers from gaining access
into the premises.
The lawmakers mainly from the people’s
Democratic Party (PDP) had rushed to the national assembly on a tip-off that
some APC Senators planned to invade the national assembly and forcefully effect
a leadership change that will remove Senate President Bukola Saraki and his Deputy,
Ike Ekweremadu.
After a few hours of pushing
and shoving, the PDP lawmakers finally gained entrance and immediately went
straight to barricade the doors to the chamber to prevent any illegal session.
At the moment, only lawmakers
are allowed into the national assembly as DSS operatives barred journalists and
support staff of the national assembly from entering.
The APC senators alleged to be planning the illegal sitting are
not seen around the assembly.
